Introduction

Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder of fuel homoeostasis characterized by hyperglycemia and altered lipid metabolism caused by islet b-cells being unable to secrete adequate insulin in response to varying degrees of over nutrition, inactivity, consequential overweight and insulin resistance.

Diabetes mellitus and lesser forms of glucose intolerance, particularly impaired glucose tolerance, can now be found in almost every population in the world and epidemiological evidence suggests that, without effective prevention and control programs, diabetes will likely to continue to increase globally.¹
