Abstract

Chronic renal failure patients undergoing peritonealare susceptible to periodontal diseases due to several complicating factors and the systemic condition of the patient. A cross sectional study was conducted to assess the periodontal disease prevalence among 30 patients undergoing peritonealdialysis. Comparison was made with an age and sex matched control subjects from the hospital based population. Thirty peritoneal dialysispatients (15 males, 15 females) with the mean age of 42.6±10.4 years comprised the study group. Periodontal parameters such as plaque index (PI), bleeding on probing (BOP), Probing pocket depth and clinical attachment level (CAL) were measured in these patients and an age and sex matched 30 control subjects. The data were collected and analysed. The PI, BOP, PPD and CAL were significantly higher in patients undergoing haemodialysis compared to control subjects. The mean duration of dialysis was 5.50±3.02 (2 to 10. years) From the observation of the study it can be concluded that patients undergoing peritoneal dialysisare more prone to periodontal diseases. Further studies with larger population and comparison with the duration of dialysis may further substantiate the current findings.
